A cyst is a common, usually harmless skin growth, but that doesn't mean it should be ignored or treated carelessly. Greco Dermatology's Venice office provides expert evaluation and removal of cysts of all kinds, backed by a double-board-certified dermatologist with more than 20,000 skin procedures performed.
What Is a Cyst?
A cyst is a closed sac beneath the skin filled with fluid or semisolid material. According to Mayo Clinic, the most common type is the epidermoid cyst, a noncancerous bump that most often appears on the face, neck, or trunk.
Epidermoid cysts are frequently called sebaceous cysts, but Mayo Clinic notes the two are different: true sebaceous cysts arise from oil-producing glands and are far less common.
Common features of a cyst include:
- Slow, gradual growth
- Little to no pain, though it can become tender, infected, or ruptured over time
- A small blackhead-like opening at the center of the bump
