What is Red Light Therapy?

Red light therapy is a hair regrowth treatment for both men and women. Like trees, flowers, and other plants utilize sunlight to grow, humans can utilize certain wavelengths of light and transform them into cellular energy. In the case of red light, the wavelengths trigger mitochondria within your cells. This lowers oxidative stress and boosts circulation, which gives your body more energy. When you have more energy than your body requires, your cells are turbo-powered to repair themselves and multiply. When used for hair restoration, the result is hair growth that is fuller, thicker, and more robust. In addition, red light therapy begins the development of new hair follicles.

Common Hair Loss

Did you know that over 50% of men over 40 and 75% of women over 65 experience androgenetic alopecia? For men, balding patterns at the crown of the head are most common, while women typically lose hair all over the head. With this being a common aesthetic problem, many people are looking for hair restoration options.

Photobiomodulation with red light is an advanced low-level laser management system that gets excellent results. However, it's important to have a consultation with a hair loss expert before setting your expectations on red light therapy, as some types of hair loss won’t respond to this treatment.

“Dr. Greco is a top doctor in his field. I can’t imagine having gone to anyone else. Wonderful work, wonderful experience, wonderful staff. I would recommend him to everyone interested in getting this work done to Dr. Greco.”

What Happens During the Treatment?

A red light therapy treatment involves exposing your scalp to low-level red light for a certain time, typically 20-30 minutes. There is no pain during the treatment and many patients find it relaxing.

Most patients will require multiple treatment sessions to get optimal results. The number of treatments you'll need will depend on your specific cause of hair loss.

Red Light Therapy in Combination

Although red light therapy can be used independently, it's also compatible with hair loss medications such as Rogaine® (generic: minoxidil), Propecia® (generic: finasteride), oral minoxidil, and dutasteride. In addition, it is often used in conjunction with our hair transplant procedures (Bio-FUT and Bio-FUE), as red light therapy may increase the survival and healing of transplanted hair follicles.
